Fix RPCS3 Firmware Not Found

Check whether the PUP is missing from the file picker, rejected after selection, or installed without appearing in the emulator. Follow the matching file checks before downloading another copy.

Start with the file, then the RPCS3 command

Fix RPCS3 firmware not found by separating three cases: the PUP is absent from the file picker, RPCS3 opens it but rejects it, or installation finishes but the firmware still appears missing. First confirm that a complete PS3 firmware PUP is saved on a local drive with its real file extension visible. Then open RPCS3 and choose File > Install Firmware. The emulator does not need a separately downloaded PS3 BIOS archive.

Do not switch to Install Packages/Raps, rename a mystery file, or keep retrying the same partial download. Those actions do not make a hidden or incomplete PUP visible. The sections below follow the symptom from the file on disk through the import result, so you can stop as soon as the cause is clear.

What RPCS3 firmware not found can mean

The wording can describe different stages. Identify the last step that worked before changing files or emulator settings.

If the picker opens but the PUP is absent, RPCS3 has not read it yet. Check the folder, full extension, download status, and file filter; visibility alone says nothing about compatibility.

If a selected file is rejected, inspect its type and compare its exact size and checksum with the source. If import completes but firmware still appears missing, check the same RPCS3 copy and data location. A game that fails to boot is a separate compatibility issue.

Check the PUP file before trying again

A filename alone cannot prove that a download completed or that the bytes are firmware. Check the RPCS3 firmware file itself before retrying the import.

Wait for the browser transfer to finish. Suffixes such as .crdownload, .part, or .tmp indicate a temporary file; do not import it. If the download failed, start again from the verified source instead of changing its extension.

Show full file extensions. A displayed PS3UPDAT.PUP may really be .PUP.zip or .PUP.html; an archive or saved error page is not the firmware package. Check the complete name and file type in the file manager.

Leave the file unchanged and compare its exact byte size and SHA-256 with the source page. If either differs, replace the copy. A matching name cannot compensate for a different hash.

  • Select the PUP itself, not the browser's temporary download entry.
  • Do not extract, recompress, patch, or rename a package to bypass a failed check.
  • Move the file from an archive viewer or remote share to a normal local folder before importing.
  • Use the size and checksum shown on the same verified source page as the file URL.

Choose the firmware with the RPCS3 command

RPCS3 firmware import uses the emulator's firmware installer, not its package or game-update workflow.

RPCS3 reads the selected package from its current path; it does not need a separate BIOS archive or a manually created virtual hard-drive folder for this action. The standard download name PS3UPDAT.PUP is useful when checking the file, but changing a filename does not repair its contents. If you downloaded the correct PUP under another clear name, select that complete file and verify its source and checksum rather than renaming it without a reason.

  1. 1

Open the RPCS3 copy you use

Start the same installed or portable RPCS3 copy where you expect the firmware to appear. Avoid switching between two emulator folders during the check.

  2. 2

    Choose File > Install Firmware

Use the firmware command in the menu. Install Packages/Raps is for another package workflow and will not import a PS3 system-software PUP.

  3. 3

    Browse to the saved file

Navigate to the actual Downloads or storage folder. Do not assume that the PUP is in the PS3/UPDATE USB path; that path is for a physical console update.

  4. 4

    Select the complete PUP

If the picker filters file types, confirm that you are viewing the folder and file type you expect. Choose the PUP itself rather than a ZIP, HTML document, or partial file.

  5. 5

    Wait for the import result

Let RPCS3 finish processing. If it reports an error, record the message and check the file before repeating the same import.

Fix a file that does not appear in the picker

If RPCS3 firmware is not found in the picker, first check its folder and filter; the picker does not search every drive.

Check the folder shown in the picker. Locate the completed download in your file manager first; if it is on removable storage, confirm that the drive is mounted and readable.

For cloud storage, make the file available offline and copy it to a readable local folder. A visible placeholder may not contain downloaded data. If the file remains hidden, show extensions and review the picker filter, then let RPCS3 inspect the selected PUP.

If RPCS3 finds the file but rejects it

When RPCS3 firmware is found in the picker but rejected, focus on the selected package and import result rather than the path.

Confirm that you selected the complete PUP rather than a ZIP, HTML page, or temporary file. Compare exact bytes and SHA-256 with the verified source; replace the copy if either differs.

If both match, check free disk space and write access to RPCS3's application and data locations. Keep security protections enabled; review system notifications and the RPCS3 log for a blocked write. Record the full error and first useful log entry before retrying. If the message identifies an outdated build, update from the official RPCS3 source and try once.

A PUP extension is not proof of origin. Use a verified Sony source and its published file facts; this guide does not provide modified firmware, game files, keys, or security-bypass instructions.

If the import finishes but firmware still looks missing

After RPCS3 firmware import finishes, check its status in the same emulator context that started it.

Reopen the same RPCS3 installation or portable copy and check firmware status. A shortcut may start a different copy, so compare its application path and data location before reinstalling.

If firmware still appears missing, keep the import result and relevant log details and consult RPCS3's Quickstart or support guidance. Do not delete the data directory as a first step. If firmware is present but one game fails, check that title's compatibility information and log; repeated imports will not diagnose a game-specific problem.

  • Check the same RPCS3 copy and user-data context.
  • Keep the error text and log excerpt before changing files.
  • Use the game compatibility page for a title-specific launch failure.
Quick answers

RPCS3 firmware not found FAQ

Does RPCS3 need a separate PS3 BIOS file?

No separate BIOS archive is required for the firmware import described here. Use the official PS3 system-software PUP through File > Install Firmware. Avoid downloading an unrelated BIOS ZIP.

Where should I save PS3UPDAT.PUP for RPCS3?

Save the complete file in a normal local folder that the account running RPCS3 can read. It does not need to be in the PS3/UPDATE USB folder used by a physical console.

Can I rename the PUP so RPCS3 can find it?

Renaming does not change the file contents or repair a hidden extension, partial download, or invalid package. Locate the real file, verify its source and checksum, and select that file from the picker.

Should I use Install Packages/Raps for firmware?

No. Use File > Install Firmware for the PS3 system-software PUP. The package and firmware commands handle different file workflows.

Why does the file appear in my folder but not in RPCS3?

The picker may be open to another folder, the file may be online-only or on an unmounted drive, or its true extension may differ from the visible name. Locate it in the operating system first, make it locally available, and check the picker filter.

What if RPCS3 says the PUP is corrupted?

Compare the complete file's exact size and SHA-256 with the verified source page. If they differ, download it again. If they match, review write access, free space, the RPCS3 build, and the first relevant log error.

Firmware imported, but my game still will not start. Is it missing?

Not necessarily. Firmware installation and game compatibility are separate. Check the title's RPCS3 compatibility information and log instead of importing the same PUP repeatedly.
